INMAR Caribe was Launched on October 14, 2023 day of the anular eclipse
The Institute of Citizen Sciences of the Sea (INMAR Caribe) will be inaugurated on the 14th of October at 2:00 pm in Cahuita.
1. Welcome and dialogue presentation of the Institute of Marine Sciences (INMAR Caribe) by Javiera Aravena.
2. Partial reading of the story in construction, “Oceanic Earth”, is the title of the work in construction by María Suárez Toro.
3. Ritual of tree planting and presentation by Leda Villa.
4. Drumming session in honor of the the sea with a dynamic ensemble y Fabián Pacheco of Bloque Verde.

The ocean constitutes our life on Earth so that we all have life, a good life.
That is so because the ocean
- Provides food
- Protects us
- Regulates the climate
- Gives us oxigen
- Provides a venue for trasportation
- Provides a venue for recreation
- Gives us mental health
- Holds histories and tells us how to construct our future.
The sea is a large body of sonorous water, full of color, smell and wildlife. It is that part of the earth where we always return and want to give back to the sea. And with this great natural phenomenon of the annular eclipse, we take to the water and welcome ourselves to a new community space for creation, expression and citizen research:
- knowledge of the sea
- coastal marine history and mythology
- of the graphic arts of the music
- production and training
- diving with purpose that ambassadors of the sea do of the communication
- creative residencies
- regenerative planting of flora
and more
Welcome all people, organizations and institutions to this new era of Institute of Citizen Marine Sciences INMAR CARIBBEAN
- Reading by María Suárez Toro of the feature about the emergence of the
ocean in the Planet, from her book Oceanic Earth. Letting the sea speak for us, the book combines science, mythology, history, imaginary and poetry. In the voice and protagonist that is the SEA on our planet, whose body has given us life and continues to give us everything: the climate, balance, food, minerals and my joy. And although this body of sea on the planet is very small (2% of the earth’s mass), it has nevertheless been a source of life and nourishes everything; It balances everything and remains the same vital composition and the same quantity, for centuries of millennia. She, while Oceanic Earth, is the one that has to talk to us to learn how to use our small vital powers to contribute to the balance of life.
3. Leda Villa; Presentation and ritual of two trees to be planted in the patio of the INMAR Caribe premises in Cahuita soon, in homage to the Sangrillo tree that has given its ancestral name to our district and town of Cahuita. Leda: “My work for many years when I came here in 1979… has been towards social justice because I am a revolutionary, Cahuiteña and Talamanqueña and so many things that they say about me, but here we are always trying to do things for our communities and their movements and it has It has been very hard in these communities so abandoned to the lack of opportunities, that I almost threw in the towel – no more – when they arrived, first María and then Javiera, this whole agenda of the Institute now began to take shape.
We are a coastal, not a place of tourist interest. The ambassadors of the sea arrived with a story that makes us remember what we are, and a proposal for re-education from what we are. The feet of our young people have corals tattooed and the best athletes, also barefoot, fight for their own opportunities…
That’s why we are going to plant two Corteza Amarillo and then some Sangrillos in the Marina House of INMAR Caribe, which have given us the name Cahuita. “Cahui” “ta”, Punta Cahuita in indigenous language because cahue is from Sangrillo, one of many that were in the first known settlement and “ta” is from the tip. Thank you, María, thank you Javiera, thank you Zahira and thank you all.
A minute of silemce for the victims of the war in the Middle East. Violence does not end conflicto, it escalates it. No to War, Yes to justice and peace worldwide. Any conflict in the world is ours b ecause we are all connected as a planetary family.

About the Institute of Citizen Sciences of the Sea (IMAR):
It is an initiative in gestation in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica that will promote citizen science, communication and coastal marine arts in recognition, actions and services to support their symbiotic regeneration, their natural and cultural gifts and ancestry in marine waters and their coastal communities in collaboration with their regenerative marine-coastal initiatives, especially the Embajadoras/es del Mar Community Diving Center and the Festival of the Sea, among others.
About the eclipse:
That October 14 in the Caribbean, an eclipse of the moon on the sun was be felt and seen in Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. It is a lunar event characterized astrologically by being considered moments of liberation and letting go of what no longer serves us, because eclipses mark new beginnings.” And ancestrally for our original indigenous cultures, they are a reminder that means new stars and new life in the universe. They strengthen our connection with nature and the universe with a meaning of hope and new life. For African cultures, eclipses are part of the fractals of the universe, that is it’s recurring patterns.
